David Kaplan: Yes
The discordant cousins reunite on a tour of Poland in honor of their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s home in Poland, where Jesse Eisenberg’s actual ancestors settled in the diaspora.. Benji Kaplan: We stay moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor walks past, takes the tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets up behind the train, wanders around the front, looking for strays.
Benji Kaplan: Yes
David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we strays? By the time he gets to the front, the train will be at the station and we’re free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s fucking stupid. Tickets will probably cost twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of the thing. Don’t pay for train tickets in Poland. This is our country.
On CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode 4644 (2024)
David Kaplan: No, it wasn’t, it’s our country. They fired us because they thought we were cheap. 12 Etudes, Op. 25, No. 3 in F major Written by Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. I’ve always enjoyed watching Jesse Eisenberg perform. He usually brings a wiry nervousness and some smart snappy dialogue to his roles.
David is a high-strung billboard artist with his wife and child
He just won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival for A REAL PAIN. Eisenberg produced, wrote and directed this "drama" that explores the relationship between estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin). Benji is a sensitive, emotionally aware person grieving the loss of his grandmother, to whom he was very close. They go on a trip to Poland together with a Jewish history tour group, which obviously stirs up different and difficult feelings. This is a beautiful film with fully developed characters who grow along the way. It’s clear that they’re both going through something, as everyone in this is. The script is well-paced, with the perfect combination of emotional beats and comedy.
I hope awards season will be about REAL PAIN!
This is actually Eisenberg’s second film that he’s written and directed, the first being WHEN I FINISH SAVE THE WORLD, which is now on my watch list. I knew from seeing SUCCESSION that Kieran Culkin is amazing, and he’s even better in this. Having said that, I can’t ignore Eisenberg’s performance. In a way, it’s harder to play a low-key role, which he excels at. The film is about generational trauma, different types of pain, and the human condition.
